My Lenten Promise

So it's no secret around these parts that I am Catholic. Lent was a very big deal to me growing up (still is but was especially emphasized)! I went to a Catholic school and it was a part of my faith and daily curriculum during the Lenten season.

To me Lent is a season of fasting and prayer. No meat on Fridays was strictly enforced in my house. As an adult, I admit -- very hard to remember to do this. I have so many memories from growing up and going to eat at The Fish Market in Birmingham on Friday nights with my mom and stepdad or making my Dad and stepmom cater to my needs with a cheese pizza.

I have given up so many things over the years. Some have been very major and some not so big! As a child, I never really gave up anything too big. But as I grew older and understood the importance of fasting it became more evident that I really did need to give up things that were measurable and were things that I enjoyed. I have given up drinking soft drinks many times (caffeine is my vice!) and I even gave up caffeine once, too (no sweet tea or coffee). I have given up meat (yes, ALL meat) for 40 days and gave up ALL sweets, too. Oh and did I mention one of my most major ones was giving up beer! It was a strug for sure as this was during college.

This year I am going to be on a cruise during lent and have had a struggle figuring out what to give up. I know I will want to have sweets on the cruise, eat plenty of meat and fish, drink a toddy, etc. I often find it really hard to give up non-tangible things like "cussing" or "gossiping" because it's really hard to control those things. What is considered a cuss word? What's considered gossiping? What happens if you catch yourself doing it? I feel like giving up a tangible good is easier to enforce!

I have decided to give up ALL FAST FOOD!

No Zaxby's!

No Milo's!

And dare I say it, NO CHICK-FIL-A!

Cheers to having a healthier body, mind and spirit!

What are YOU giving up for Lent?

The Boom Boom

This past week I went on down to the good ole' Boom Boom a.k.a. Mardi Gras in Mobile!

Mardi Gras is a sacred holiday that Catholics, Mobilians and New Orleans Natives all hold near and dear. It's the weeks of non-stop, party til you drop partying that lead up to the 40 days of Lent. Mardi Gras (which New Orleans is known for) actually originated in Mobile, Alabama with a reveler named Joe Cain. But, that's another story for another day.

Mardi Gras' roots run deep in the Port City and the good times never stop rolling when Mardi Gras is in the air. Whether it's going to your favorite parade or attending a Mardi Gras Society's Ball... you are sure to have a good time!

I've been going to Mardi Gras balls since I was in college. This past weekend was no exception. We kicked off the weekend on Thursday night with the Mystic Striper's Society Ball and then ended the weekend right on Friday night with the Crewe of Columbus Ball.

Although it is known for beads and the infamous moon pie, Mardi Gras means so much more than a throw you catch at the parade.

I could tell you tons of stories from this year and past years too and I could talk for days on end about the history of this merry holiday (I did several research projects on it in college) but I think the pictures will do it justice. The men put on their costume de rigueur and the ladies wear floor length gowns and party all night in the heart of downtown.

Hope you all had a very happy Fat Tuesday! Until next Carnival....

Swell Caroline: Monograms + Ambassador

I am so excited to share the love with all my blog friends. I recently became a Swell Caroline ambassador! If you have read my blog for awhile, you know that I love Swell Caroline.

As an ambassador to their brand I am here to offer you an invitation to Swell Rewards. Just for signing up you can earn $5 in Swell Bucks to spend on their product. You can sign up through this link. It is very simple and takes a minute or so. Through their rewards program you can earn rewards by inviting others as well.

Not only do I love the products they offer, they also offer top notch customer service! Amy and her team of Swell gals have never failed me. Whether it be a question about a product, an order gone *mia* (this happened to my mom like 4 days before Christmas and she still got the order under the tree in time) or hosting a giveaway on my blog - they always come through!

I recently received one of their Moon and Lola monogram necklaces (in tortoise!) and love it. I have gotten SO many compliments. It literally goes with so much. Now, I "need" one in gold ;)

I got lots of SWELL jewelry from SC for Christmas.

Here are a couple of new things on my growing list:

How cute are these Fornash earrings? Derby season, anyone?!

These Singita earrings are so pretty and just chic. Needz!

Don't forget to sign up for Swell Rewards, just a click away!

My new gLee obsession

So it's not a secret to those who know me well and/or follow me on twitter that I love Glee. It's also not a secret that I am obsessed with Mike Chang (real life, Harry Shum) and his awesome dance moves.

Well move over, Mike. I have a new Glee love interest (ok, don't move over completely just a bit to make room) and his name is Damien McGinty aka Rory on the show. Damien is one of the 2 co-winners of the Glee project. Who was suppose to win 7 episode appearances but is already in 10.

He is precious, like a little lamb. Did I mention he is Irish? Well, he is and has the cutest accent. Cue the swoon.

I got the newest Glee cd the other day at Tar-jay and can't stop listening to number 7, which is him singing "Take care of yourself". I would like for him to serenade me day and night. Would you like proof that his voice is swoon worthy?

I'm going to tweet him this blog post and pray to the heavens that he replies back.

Guilt free TV

Sorry, I'm not sorry but I am 100% obsessed with Dance Moms.

Abby Lee Miller is a bad-a. Seriously... this is how competitive teachers REALLY ARE. Trust me, I know. I took dance for 16 years and competed. Do I cringe when I hear Abby scream? Sure enough. But do I secretly like and enjoy it? Yup.

My favorite dancer?

Chloe, HANDS DOWN!

I think know all of the girls are super talented. But for some reason I just love little Chloe!

Favorite mom?
It's a tie with Christi and Kelly, I would like to have a cocktail with them.

But my most favorite part of the show is.......

besides the choreography (that's great and very contemporary, unique and often deep)

THE COSTUMES!

Yes, I am a costume snob. I obsess over costumes. It's weird buuut they really do make a dance. Cheap costumes from the catologue? Not going to win... well, unless it's like a super talented group or individual. The Abby Lee dancers could probably win in a trash bag costume -- they are so amazing. I love watching them dance week after week and maybe reliving some old dance memories of my own.
I know I am not the only one who's obsessed with Dance moms!
